Dec. 18, 2008 – Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates has requested a proposal for shutting down the U.S. detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, a Pentagon official said today.

מטריית הגנה גרעינית – או – מי מסובב את מי על ה…
במאמר שהתפרסם היום ב"הארץ" נטען כי ארצות הברית מתכוונת להציע לישראל מטריית הגנה גרעינית. פרוש הדבר שארצות הברית מאיימת בתגובה גרעינית כנגד 
התקפה גרעינית מצד אירן על ישראל. כותבי המאמר מצטטים בכיר בממשל בוש שטוען (בצדק) כי האיום האמריקאי אינו אמין.
"A senior Bush administration source said that the proposal for an American nuclear umbrella for Israel was ridiculous and lacked credibility. "Who will convince the citizen in Kansas that the U.S. needs to get mixed up in a nuclear war because Haifa was bombed? And what is the point of an American response, after Israel's cities are destroyed in an Iranian nuclear strike"
בסוף המאמר מצויין כי אירן עברה את נקודת האל חזור בפיתוח נשק גרעיני וכעת היא מתמקדת בהשגת חומרים בקיעים לשם פיתוח פצצה. בניית הפצצה על-פי "הארץ" היא עניין הנתון כעת להחלטתו של הממשל האירני שמעדיף כעת לצבור חומרים בקיעים, העדפה זו היא אשר מעניקה חלון הזדמנויות אחרון לדיפלומטיה.

מטריית ההגנה הגרעינית של ארצות הברית אינה אמינה אך היא גם אינה כנה. במרכז סבן- מכון ברוקינגס ובמועצה ליחסים בינלואמיים נכתב דו"ח המלצות לנשיא הנכנס בנושא על-ידי מרטין אינדיק שגריר ארצות הברית בישראל (לשעבר) וריצרד הס נשיא המועצה ליחסים בינלאומיים ויועץ לשעבר של קוולין פאוול.
הדו"ח ממליץ להעניק לישראל מטריית הגנה גרעינית בכדי למנוע מישראל לתקוף את אירן ולא להפך. ישראל כידוע מחזיקה ביכולת גרעינית משולשת (כתבתי במקור גם את המונח המקובל אך בעיית עברית אנגלית חירבנה לי את הטקסט), כלומר מבנה כוחות בעל יכולת גרעינית המורכב מיכולות ימיות (צוללות דולפין), אוויריות וקרקעיות (סדרת טילי יריחו בעלי טווח של 1500-3000 ק"מ). לישראל יש יכולת מכה שניה בכדי להתגונן מפני איום גרעיני אירני ובוודאי יכולת מספקת בכדי לשגר מכת מנע, על כן אין צורך במטריית ההגנה הגרעינית שכל מטרתה היא מניעת תקיפת אירן וריתוק הכוחות הישראלים מכוח הסכמים דיפלומטים.
"Because of Israel’s vulnerability to an Iranian nuclear first strike, its fuse will necessarily be shorter than America’s. And negotiations as well as stepped-up sanctions will inevitably take time to work. To increase Israel’s tolerance for a more drawn-out diplomatic engagement, the next president should bolster Israel’s deterrent capabilities by providing a nuclear guarantee and an enhanced antiballistic missile defense capability."
מתקפה ישראלית על אירן אינה ניראת באופק של חצי שנה לפחות (עקב הבחירות) וישראל תעדיף לשחק את הילד הטוב ולפעול על-פי הכלל של "נותנים לך תיקח, מרביצים לך תברח" כל עוד הזירה הפוליטית אינה מאפשרת יציאה למלחמה גם כך.
